"Tomie is rather peppery, like her name suggests. She's a cheerful street-urchin from Kaineng, who got a living mainly by performing on the streets (and doing some stealthy stealing). Her parents wished a better life for her, and managed to get her enrolled in Shing Jea, where her talents were put to better use."
